The speciality of oral and maxillofacial pathology is concerned with diagnosis and study of the causes and effects of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. it is sometimes considered to be a specialty of dentistry and pathology.

HOD’s Desk
The Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Microbiology is the discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification and management of diseases affecting the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions. The department trains students to perform routine histopathological evaluations along with haematological, cytological and microbiological investigations.

The students are trained in the department in the science of histology and pathology of oral and maxillofacial region utilizing state-of-the-art digital microscopy and LCD projection system, by highly proficient staff members. The department is supported by a professor, two readers and a senior lecturer.

The course curriculum for the undergraduate students is as follows
  • I BDS - Oral and Dental Anatomy, Histology, Physiology and Embryology (University exam to be taken at the end of the academic year)
  • II BDS - Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (a few key topics are covered)
  • III BDS - Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (University exam to be taken at the end of the academic year)

  • The classes are in the form of didactic lectures, interactive discussions / seminars and demonstrations.

Services At The Department
The oral pathology laboratory accepts biopsy and surgical tissue specimen for histopathological evaluation and diagnosis from medical and dental departments of this institution. We undertake diagnostic procedures such as routine haematological procedures, punch biopsies, fine needle aspiration cytology and exfoliative cytology. The laboratory also serves as a source for research projects undertaken by the faculty and postgraduate students of the college. We have fully functional and well equipped oral cancer/ cancer detection center for screening any precancerous and cancerous lesions by the trained dental personal.
